OpenAI Strengthens Cyber Defense Initiative with GPT-5.4-Cyber for Approved Researchers

OpenAI is enhancing its Trusted Access for Cyber (TAC) program to provide professional defenders with prioritized access to advanced AI tools aimed at cybersecurity. The program’s expansion will now include thousands of verified defenders and hundreds of teams focused on safeguarding critical software. Alongside this, OpenAI is launching GPT-5.4-Cyber, a specialized version of GPT-5.4 tailored for defensive cybersecurity tasks. This model features lower refusal thresholds for legitimate cybersecurity work and enhances capabilities such as binary reverse engineering, allowing professionals to analyze compiled software for vulnerabilities without source code access. Access to this program is through individual verification or enterprise requests, targeting security education and responsible vulnerability research. OpenAI emphasizes democratized access, iterative deployment, and ecosystem resilience while addressing the dual-use risks of AI in cyber capabilities. Notably, Codex Security has already contributed to identifying thousands of vulnerabilities since its launch, highlighting the program’s effectiveness.
