OpenAI Suspends Controversial Ad Feature in ChatGPT Following User Backlash

OpenAI clarified earlier today that it has not started showing ads on ChatGPT, despite user complaints on social media about unwanted app and website suggestions. Chief Research Officer Mark Chen acknowledged that these app suggestions were indeed appearing and admitted the company “fell short.” He assured users that they have disabled these suggestions and are working on improving the model’s precision, as well as providing better controls for users. Vice President Nick Turley emphasized that there are no live ads or ad tests happening on ChatGPT and dismissed any misleading screenshots as fake. Internally, CEO Sam Altman has declared a “code red” to enhance ChatGPT quality, delaying ad initiatives and other projects. This shift aligns with growing competition from rivals like Google, whose Gemini 3 model has excelled in benchmarks, while OpenAI prepares for a potential launch of its GPT-5.2 model soon.
