OpenAI is set to deploy gas turbines at its first Stargate data center in Abilene, Texas, following in Elon Musk’s footsteps. The company has acquired 29 GE Vernova LM2500XPRESS gas turbines, each producing 34MW, totaling 986MW—enough energy to power nearly 500,000 GB200 NVL72 chips. Crusoe, the infrastructure partner, aims for these turbines to provide efficient power for energy-intensive AI applications. Notably, these turbines feature quick-response capabilities akin to jet engines and incorporate Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) technology to minimize nitrogen oxide emissions. With power supply issues plaguing data center operations, many tech giants, including Microsoft and Google, are exploring nuclear Small Modular Reactors (SMRs) as a long-term solution. Currently, Stargate 1 has permits for only 10 turbines, indicating potential regulatory hurdles or future installations.
