A recent cybersecurity report by OpenAI revealed that the Chinese government is using ChatGPT for “cyber special operations” aimed at political dissidents domestically and internationally. OpenAI found that a government-operated account had been uploading status reports to ChatGPT for refinement. The report outlined methods employed by China to silence critics across U.S. social media platforms, involving a significant workforce and extensive fake account networks. For instance, operatives forged U.S. court documents to remove posts and launched coordinated abusive reporting against dissidents. Accounts like @whyyoutouzhele, which highlights corruption in China, have been notably targeted. Platforms such as X, YouTube, and Bluesky are urged to recognize how their moderation systems are exploited by the Chinese Communist Party and to enhance their efforts against influence operations. Bluesky has initiated actions to identify and counter such activities, and Meta is similarly addressing these concerns through regular monitoring.
