OpenAI Under Sam Altman Set to Launch Expansion in Norway

OpenAI, led by Sam Altman, is set to expand into Europe with a new data center in Norway, specifically within the Stargate project framework. Located in Kvandal, Narvik, the innovative facility will utilize 230MW of renewable energy, with plans to extend capacity by an additional 290MW. NVIDIA Europe has announced a partnership to create a high-uptime AI infrastructure that collaborates with local academic institutions for research.

Norway, renowned for its affordable hydroelectric power and conducive climate, was strategically chosen for its low connectivity and isolation, ensuring sustainable energy provision. OpenAI’s joint venture with Nscale Global Holdings and Aker ASA aims to establish an AI gigafactory that will utilize 100% renewable energy, positioning Norway as a burgeoning data center hub. The country anticipates a $2.15 billion investment in data centers this year amidst evolving EU infrastructure efforts to meet AI demands and balance energy regulation. This move boosts Europe’s role in the global AI landscape.
