OpenAI’s Stargate initiative has launched a significant project in Europe, collaborating with Nscale and Aker ASA to build a 100,000-GPU compute cluster in Norway’s Kvandal by 2026. This facility aims to enhance Europe’s AI capabilities, contributing 230 megawatts of compute power, with future expansions potentially adding another 290 megawatts. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman emphasized the need for increased computing resources to support developers, researchers, and startups across Europe.
Nscale and Aker plan to invest around $1 billion initially to bring 20 megawatts online, essential for deploying over 10,500 Nvidia GPUs featuring advanced liquid cooling. Power will primarily be sourced from local hydroelectric plants, with surplus heat utilized for district heating. The facility won’t exclusively serve OpenAI; excess capacity will be available to businesses across the UK and Northern Europe. This project aligns with OpenAI’s broader international ambitions, including the earlier announced Stargate UAE initiative.
