OpenAI is now accepting submissions for ChatGPT apps, set to create a new directory after a review process. These apps enable users to execute specific tasks, like ordering food, directly in their conversations. The directory can be accessed through the Tools menu, and users can launch apps using the “@” command. Currently, a beta version of the Software Development Kit (SDK) is available, with the first tested applications expected to launch in early 2026.
OpenAI emphasizes security by ensuring apps are appropriate for general audiences and collect only essential user information. Developers can link their ChatGPT apps to external websites or native applications for transactions involving physical goods. Additionally, OpenAI is exploring monetization options for digital products and has been working with PayPal for several months. This initiative follows the October Dev Day, which introduced the Apps SDK and AgentKit for autonomous AI agents, enhancing user experience and functionality.
