Large language models, like ChatGPT, operate as “black boxes,” obscuring both their internal mechanisms and user demographics. OpenAI, alongside the National Bureau of Economic Research (NBER), explored how its users employ the chatbot. The findings revealed that 80% of interactions fall into three main categories: “Practical Guidance,” “Seeking Information,” and “Writing,” with practical guidance being the most prevalent. Interestingly, work-related interactions have decreased from 47% in June 2024 to 27%, as personal usage soared. A small percentage, about 2%, engaged the chatbot for emotional support, despite indications that such interactions might be more common, particularly among younger users aged 18-25 who constituted 46% of messages. Additionally, the gender gap has narrowed, with the male user base shrinking from 80% to 48%. Overall, OpenAI’s insights highlight the evolving landscape of chatbot usage, indicating broader personal engagement and shifting demographics.
