OpenAI’s latest update to ChatGPT introduces a complex model selection for improved user experience, rather than upgrading to GPT-5. Previously, users had limited options between two variants: GPT (auto-rotating between reasoning and non-reasoning) and GPT-Thinking (focusing on reasoning). The new ChatGPT 5 model selector now includes various modes: Auto, Fast, Thinking mini, Thinking, and Pro, catering to different user needs from instant responses to research-grade intelligence (Pro requires an upgrade). The default model is GPT-5, where OpenAI automatically selects the best option based on queries. Additionally, users can access Legacy models (GPT-4o, GPT-4.1, o3, and o4-mini) by enabling it in their settings, a feature available only for ChatGPT Plus and Pro accounts. This versatility aims to enhance user satisfaction and simplify interactions with the AI, despite initial confusion about the multiple model options.
