OpenAI Unveils o3-Pro Model as CEO Sam Altman Advocates for Extended Development of Open-Weights Version

OpenAI announced that its annualized revenue run rate reached $10 billion as of June 2024. The company rolled out its new o3-pro model, which replaces the earlier o1-pro for Pro and Team users, with broader access for Enterprise and Edu users coming a week later. The o3-pro model has received favorable evaluations for its superior performance in domains like science and programming, offering enhanced clarity and accuracy. Notably, it can search the web, analyze files, and process visual inputs. However, the anticipated open weight model will be delayed; CEO Sam Altman stated it would be released later in the summer, citing unexpected developments within the research team. This open weights model, while not fully open source, will allow technical users greater flexibility in customizing the model. OpenAI also emphasized that this is its first significant open language model release since GPT-2 in 2019.
