OpenAI’s ChatGPT is gaining traction among students as the company collaborates with ed-tech startups in India and the US to create educational products using its APIs. Leah Belsky, OpenAI’s VP of Education, highlights AI’s role as a transformative infrastructure, akin to the internet, providing personalized tutoring to bridge learning gaps, especially in underserved markets like India. Recently, OpenAI launched its “study mode,” designed as a learning companion that guides students through processes rather than just offering quick answers. This feature was rigorously tested on IIT and other competitive exams, aiming to enhance academic performance. Belsky noted that early tests demonstrate strong results, particularly for IIT-level questions. Furthermore, the study mode will support 11 Indian languages and multimodal functionalities, responding directly to student feedback about desired tutoring support. OpenAI is committed to strengthening its partnerships within India’s education sector to further this initiative, positioning itself as a competitor in the growing ed-tech landscape.
