OpenAI’s Adult Mode Will Not Produce Pornographic Content in Audio, Images, or Video

OpenAI is set to introduce an “adult mode” for ChatGPT, enabling users to have explicit conversations while prohibiting the generation of explicit multimedia content. This development, teased by CEO Sam Altman for adult users, was initially planned for a 2026 release but has faced multiple delays as OpenAI prioritized other projects. Despite internal concerns from a council of experts warning against potential emotional dependencies and the risk of underage access, OpenAI continues to push forward. Reports indicate that the age verification technology has failed to accurately identify underage users nearly 12% of the time, raising concerns that millions of adolescents might access these adult conversations. The council members cautioned that such interactions could lead to adverse mental health outcomes, even referencing incidents of suicidal behavior linked to user attachment to ChatGPT. OpenAI maintains that its algorithm meets industry standards but acknowledges no age verification system is entirely foolproof.
