Despite internal concerns from a council of experts warning against potential emotional dependencies and the risk of underage access, OpenAI continues to push forward. Reports indicate that the age verification technology has failed to accurately identify underage users nearly 12% of the time, raising concerns that millions of adolescents might access these adult conversations. The council members cautioned that such interactions could lead to adverse mental health outcomes, even referencing incidents of suicidal behavior linked to user attachment to ChatGPT. OpenAI maintains that its algorithm meets industry standards but acknowledges no age verification system is entirely foolproof.
