OpenAI’s Altman Announces Strategic Partnership with the Pentagon

OpenAI has announced a partnership with the Department of Defense (DoD) to deploy AI services for handling classified documents, as stated by CEO Sam Altman. Although a formal contract hasn’t been signed yet, this agreement aims to safely integrate ChatGPT into classified networks. Altman highlighted the DoD’s acceptance of OpenAI’s conditions, which include prohibitions on domestic mass surveillance and accountability for the use of force, particularly concerning autonomous weapons. Technical safeguards will also be established to ensure model safety, alongside the deployment of specialized technical professionals (FDEs) to facilitate production environments. This decision follows former President Donald Trump’s directive to cease collaborations with Anthropic, another AI company with similar stipulations. Tensions arise as Anthropic plans to legally dispute any risk designations by the DoD, emphasizing concerns regarding mass surveillance and autonomous weapon systems. Additionally, the Pentagon is exploring partnerships with Google and xAI for AI applications in classified settings.
