OpenAI’s Compute Margin Surges to Double Over the Past Two Years

A recent report highlights significant advancements in OpenAI’s “compute margin,” improving to 70% in October, up from 52% at the end of 2024. This represents a notable increase, doubling the margin since January of the previous year. Despite leading in compute margins over competitors like Anthropic, OpenAI has yet to achieve profitability amid concerns of a sector bubble. CEO Sam Altman recently urged employees to strengthen ChatGPT’s position against rising competition. In the past 31 months, consumer spending on the ChatGPT mobile app exceeded $3 billion, with $2.5 billion spent this year alone, marking a remarkable 408% increase. Notably, ChatGPT achieves 2.5 billion daily queries from around 900 million users, outpacing Google’s growth rate significantly. Over half of the U.S. population engages with ChatGPT for activities spanning shopping, planning, and wellness, with 30 million users utilizing it for 25+ tasks, reflecting a substantial shift in digital interaction towards conversational AI interfaces.
