OpenAI is pivoting from developing AI models to utilizing its DALL-E platform for an animated film, “Critterz.” Led by creative director Chad Nelson, this AI-generated project aims for a nine-month production schedule, targeting a premiere at the 2026 Cannes Film Festival. The film, which incorporates human voice actors, will be entirely crafted using DALL-E’s video generation capabilities, with an estimated budget of $30 million. OpenAI seeks to demonstrate the viability of AI in filmmaking, potentially fostering broader industry acceptance. Despite prior resistance to generative AI, highlighted by the SAG-AFTRA strike, interest persists, particularly after controversies surrounding AI-generated elements in recent Academy Award nominees. Production will be supported by Vertigo Films and Native Foreign, the latter known for blending AI with traditional production techniques. By revolutionizing animation and storytelling, OpenAI hopes to redefine the film landscape while navigating industry concerns regarding AI’s role in creative processes.
