OpenAI has achieved a significant milestone by demonstrating “gold medal-level performance” at the International Math Olympiad (IMO), showcasing advancements in AI. Research scientist Alexander Wei revealed that an experimental model tackled five out of six challenges at this prestigious math competition, securing 35 out of 42 points. The IMO invites top students from various countries to solve complex algebra and pre-calculus problems, which often require creative thinking. Notably, only 67 of 630 participants received gold medals in this year’s event. Traditionally, AI struggles with problems demanding creativity and complex decision-making; however, OpenAI’s model exhibited human-like reasoning capabilities. Wei emphasized that the development of this model allows for intricate, watertight arguments akin to those of human mathematicians. Despite these advancements, OpenAI warns that the upcoming release of GPT-5 will not yet replicate this level of mathematical prowess, which is still several months away.
