OpenAI’s Hardware Initiative: Exploring Humane-Style Pins and Smart Wearables | Tech News

OpenAI recently acquired io Products, an AI hardware startup founded by former Apple design chief Jony Ive, and is reportedly developing several innovative devices. According to a report from The Information, OpenAI is considering creating a smart speaker-like device without a display and has already partnered with Apple suppliers Luxshare and Goertek for production. Additionally, the company might be working on smart glasses, a digital voice recorder, and a wearable device reminiscent of Humane’s “pin.” These products, rumored to feature OpenAI branding, are expected to launch between late 2026 and early 2027. CEO Sam Altman indicated plans for a pocket-sized, screenless device, although in-ear devices seem unlikely. Following the partnership with Jony Ive, several key Apple engineers have moved to OpenAI, including Tang Tan, who is now its chief hardware officer. While prototypes remain unseen, OpenAI’s approach appears to draw inspiration from Apple’s design ethos.
