OpenAI’s Math Missteps: A Deep Dive | TechCrunch

In a recent controversy surrounding OpenAI’s GPT-5, Meta’s Chief AI Scientist Yann LeCun criticized the hype, remarking, “Hoisted by their own GPTards.” This followed OpenAI’s VP Kevin Weil’s tweet about GPT-5 allegedly solving ten previously unsolved Erdős problems, claims quickly debunked by mathematician Thomas Bloom. He pointed out that these “open” problems simply indicated he was unaware of their solutions, not that GPT-5 solved them. Instead, GPT-5 merely identified references to existing solutions. OpenAI researcher Sebastien Bubeck later acknowledged this accuracy while still praising the model’s ability to navigate academic literature. The incident highlights the ongoing debate over the capabilities of AI models and the importance of clear communication in AI achievements. As the field develops, it underscores the need for rigorous validation of AI claims and a responsible approach to publicizing research breakthroughs, ensuring transparency and accuracy in AI communications.
