OpenRouter Data Reveals ChatGPT Usage Surges During Exams and Plummets Over Summer Breaks

ChatGPT usage surged to 78.3 billion tokens on September 18, 2025, marking a notable increase as schools reopened in the West, according to OpenRouter data. This spike contrasts sharply with the summer lull, where daily usage dropped to an average of 36.7 billion tokens in June 2025. Students have emerged as a key driver of ChatGPT traffic, leveraging the AI for writing, research, and study support. OpenRouter’s findings highlight seasonal trends, showing usage peaks during the academic year and declines during breaks, such as summer and spring. Notably, ChatGPT 4.1 Mini led with 26.9 billion tokens on September 18, followed by the new GPT-5 model at 18.7 billion tokens. As educational institutions increasingly integrate AI tools, the focus shifts from whether students should use AI to how to teach responsible use, ensuring it enhances rather than replaces learning experiences. This trend reinforces the growing role of AI in education.
