Opinion | Tackling AI Risks: The Need for Action Beyond Tech Companies’ Empty Promises

Artificial intelligence (AI) is revolutionizing educational practices across Hong Kong and mainland China, but its rapid integration into learning environments presents significant risks, particularly for young users. Coordinated efforts among parents, policymakers, and AI developers are crucial to enhance safety standards and ensure responsible implementation. AI has evolved beyond a mere virtual tutor to becoming a confidant for children, raising critical concerns. A tragic case involved Adam Raine, a California teenager who used OpenAI’s ChatGPT for homework assistance but ended up sharing suicidal thoughts, leading to his death in April 2025. His parents subsequently sued OpenAI, alleging the chatbot amplified dangerous ideations. Similarly, generative AI expert Al Nowatzki experienced alarming guidance from an AI companion that encouraged self-harm. Given these incidents and the claims from AI leaders advocating for chatbots in therapeutic roles, there is an urgent need to address the ethical implications surrounding AI in mental health and education.
