Oracle and OpenAI’s Abilene Expansion Journey: 600MW Project Scrapped While Ambitious 4.5GW Agreement Advances

Oracle and OpenAI have halted plans to expand their Abilene, Texas, Stargate campus beyond the existing 1.2-gigawatt capacity, citing failed financing negotiations and winter weather disruptions. Initial reports labeled this decision as “canceled,” prompting Oracle to rebut claims on social media, stating these reports were “false.” Despite the controversy, the existing eight-building facility continues operations, with two buildings actively running workloads. A never-finalized expansion lease aiming for 2 gigawatts has been scrapped, and OpenAI has redirected its compute scaling efforts to other locations. Compounding the issue, an anticipated year-long delay in power readiness at the site coincides with the expected launch of Nvidia’s new architecture, Rubin, which offers significantly enhanced efficiency. As Nvidia accelerates its GPU generations, Oracle’s communications seem contradictory, leading to shareholder lawsuits over transparency. Despite current setbacks, the broader 4.5-gigawatt agreement remains on track at multiple U.S. sites, suggesting ongoing developments in AI data center infrastructure.
