OverDrive Files Lawsuit Against OpenAI for Trademark Infringement on Sora Name and Logo

OverDrive has filed a lawsuit against OpenAI in Ohio federal court, alleging trademark infringement, unfair competition, and deceptive trade practices tied to the Sora name and logo used for OpenAI’s AI video-generating app. The lawsuit seeks injunctive and monetary relief to protect OverDrive’s Sora, an established platform offering ebooks and audiobooks to students. OverDrive claims that OpenAI’s app has caused significant confusion among educators and students, threatening its brand integrity and goodwill. CEO Steve Potash emphasized the urgency of legal action after numerous attempts to resolve the issue amicably failed. He pointed to alarming feedback from librarians and educators regarding the confusion caused by OpenAI’s Sora, which features similar visual elements. The lawsuit includes evidence of customer confusion and negative reviews from users who mistakenly associated OverDrive’s platform with OpenAI’s app. OpenAI has disputed OverDrive’s claims, stating that they do not agree with the allegations.
