Pentagon Issues Ultimatum to Anthropic Regarding AI Regulations — Report

The US Defense Department has issued a deadline to artificial intelligence company Anthropic, demanding it open its technology for unrestricted military use by 5 p.m. Friday or face severe repercussions. This ultimatum follows months of discussions, particularly concerning Anthropic’s refusal to allow its Claude models for domestic surveillance or fully autonomous weapon systems. Despite cordial talks between Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth and Anthropic’s CEO, Dario Amodei, the company remains steadfast in its ethical concerns about the government’s use of AI. If Anthropic does not comply, it risks being labeled a supply-chain risk under the Defense Production Act, which would severely limit its capacity to operate within the US military sector. The Pentagon is actively seeking partnerships with several AI companies, reinforcing the strategic importance of AI in national defense. With contracts potentially reaching $200 million, the outcome could significantly influence AI’s role on the battlefield.
