Perils of Shadow AI Usage Persist Across Industries

A recent Netskope report highlights the security risks of organizations’ inconsistent adoption of AI tools, particularly as many employees rely on personal accounts lacking oversight from IT teams. Nearly 47% of users engage with generative AI platforms like ChatGPT through unmonitored means, creating vulnerabilities that hackers could exploit. While personal AI use dropped from 78% to 47%, the transition from personal to company-approved accounts rose significantly (from 25% to 62%). However, a slight increase in switching between accounts suggests gaps in convenience and feature offerings. Personal AI usage raises concerns about regulatory compliance and data security, with incidents of sensitive information exposure doubling year-over-year, averaging 223 occurrences per month. To mitigate these risks, organizations need robust AI governance, including clearer policies and better monitoring of AI usage. Prioritizing AI oversight will help organizations secure their networks and minimize the impact of shadow AI threats in the evolving security landscape.
