PG&E Unveils How AI and Machine Learning Boost Wildfire Prevention Strategies

PG&E Utilizes Advanced Technology to Prevent Wildfires in Northern California

PG&E is leveraging cutting-edge technology to mitigate wildfire risks in Northern California, as highlighted in a media briefing by Chief Meteorologist Scott Strenfel. Despite cooler fire season conditions, Cal Fire reports an uptick in the number of fires in 2025 compared to 2024. Strenfel emphasized the above-normal fire risk in August and September, referencing the National Interagency Fire Center’s data.

PG&E employs artificial intelligence and machine learning, particularly their Fire Potential Index (FPI), to analyze historical fire data and predict risks accurately. The implementation of over 1,600 weather stations since 2017 provides real-time data essential for Public Safety Power Shutoffs (PSPS), significantly contributing to fire prevention efforts. Although proving the impact of PSPS is challenging, Strenfel asserts that these technologies are effective. Looking ahead, PG&E anticipates advancements in these tools to further enhance wildfire safety measures.
