Google is reportedly planning to end its partnership with AI data-labeling firm Scale AI after learning about Meta’s acquisition of a 49% stake in the company. Google had planned to spend around $200 million on human-labeled data essential for its AI model, Gemini. Concerns have arisen that Meta’s investment could expose Google’s proprietary AI research to a competitor. Other tech giants like Microsoft and Elon Musk’s xAI are also distancing themselves from Scale AI. OpenAI had already reduced its engagement but continues to consider Scale AI one of its data vendors. These companies fear that by sharing sensitive business data with Scale AI, they risk their proprietary research information falling into the hands of Meta. For Scale AI, losing Google as a customer could be significant, especially as it heavily relies on a few major clients for its revenue, even though its valuation has surged to $29 billion.
