A recent analysis by Surfshark evaluated the privacy practices of the ten most popular AI chatbots on the iPhone App Store, highlighting their data collection habits. The study found that, on average, these chatbots collect 14 different types of personal data, with alarming statistics showing that 70% of them track users’ locations. Notably, Meta AI emerged as the top privacy offender, gathering 33 out of 35 data types, including sensitive information like racial or ethnic data and financial details. Following closely, Google’s Gemini chatbot collects 23 data types, including precise location and various contact information. The rankings underscore the fact that free chatbot services often compromise user privacy, as many interactions are used as training data. For enhanced privacy, users are encouraged to interact with chatbots through Siri, which offers anonymous queries, ensuring that user input is not utilized for training purposes.
