The Department for Science, Innovation and Technology (DSIT) has announced a £10M tender to develop an AI-augmented planning tool focused initially on householder developments. This tool aims to streamline the planning application process, cutting average processing times from over eight weeks to approximately four weeks, with a long-term goal of near-instant decisions for straightforward applications. The procurement will involve collaboration with various government bodies, including local planning authorities and the Planning Inspectorate. Bidders must demonstrate their understanding of planning processes and are required to build a working prototype for evaluation at a “demo day.” The contract will span from January 16, 2026, to May 16, 2028, with a possible extension to 2029. The AI initiative is part of the government’s broader strategy to enhance decision-making in planning and meet housing targets, including the construction of 1.5 million new homes during the current Parliament. The enquiry deadline is November 5, and the contract award will be on January 6, 2024.
