Prohibition Failed to Curb Alcohol Consumption—Can the Same Approach Succeed with AI?

During an EdSurge research project titled “Teaching Tech: Navigating Learning and AI,” educators emphasized the need for a constructive philosophy around AI tools instead of prohibitive policies. Participants from diverse locations highlighted a preference for fostering a culture of responsible AI use rather than outright bans. In interviews with 17 teachers from grades 3-12, a recurring theme emerged: the importance of critical engagement over restrictions, underscored by the concept of harm reduction. This approach advocates for equipping students with resources to navigate AI responsibly, rather than disregarding its existence.

Educators detailed tensions between curiosity and caution, asserting the need for clear definitions of academic integrity in the AI age. Three principles for implementing harm reduction were identified: transparency in AI use, collaborative learning for capacity building, and context-specific guidelines. By applying these principles, educators aim to adapt to AI’s rapid integration into education while fostering ethical standards and critical thinking skills.
