On Tuesday, Elon Musk announced that his AI startup, xAI, has acquired a third building named MACROHARDRR to significantly enhance its computing infrastructure. This strategic purchase aims to elevate xAI’s training compute capacity to nearly 2 gigawatts, propelling the company into competition with major players like OpenAI and Anthropic. While the exact location remains undisclosed, reports suggest that the facility will be positioned outside Memphis, Tennessee, where xAI operates its flagship supercomputer, Colossus, recognized as the world’s largest AI supercomputer. xAI plans to expand Colossus to accommodate over 1 million graphics processing units, positioning itself among the top AI training systems globally. Additionally, the company is in discussions for $15 billion in funding, potentially valuing xAI at $230 billion. This aggressive growth strategy highlights xAI’s ambition to develop advanced AI models and significantly scale its capabilities in the competitive AI landscape.
