Organized by Stop the AI Race, led by Michael Trazzi, the protest featured researchers, academics, and advocacy groups like PauseAI and QuitGPT. Trazzi highlighted the unity in addressing risks from powerful AI systems, emphasizing the importance of a coordinated pause on new model development, suggesting that U.S. and China could focus on safer AI applications, like medical technologies. This demonstration follows earlier efforts, including a significant open letter from the Future of Life Institute, which has received over 33,000 signatures. While supporters of rapid AI advancement warn about foreign competition, Trazzi argues that safety should come first, warning against a “suicide race” where control is jeopardized. He proposed limiting computing power as a verification method if a pause is agreed upon. Future protests may target other key AI hubs.
