Qonto Survey Reveals European SMEs Face Risks in AI Strategy Development Due to Unstable Digital Foundations

Qonto, Europe’s premier business finance management platform, reveals critical insights on digital transformation within SMEs in a new report, crafted in partnership with Appinio. The survey canvassed 1,600 senior decision-makers across France, Germany, Italy, and Spain in August 2025. Findings show a paradox: 46% of SMEs are utilizing AI tools like ChatGPT, yet core digital systems are lagging, with only 24% adopting digital accounting and 22% implementing video conferencing. Despite recognizing the significance of AI, merely 62% view it as vital, leaving many businesses—particularly in France—vulnerable to digital obsolescence. Germany leads in preparedness, while France struggles with a larger proportion of unprepared firms. Automation is yielding impressive productivity gains; 12% of surveyed SMEs save over 20 hours weekly. The survey indicates that while AI adoption is on the rise, without solid digital foundations, European SMEs risk falling behind. Addressing these gaps is crucial to maintaining competitive advantages in the evolving digital economy.
