Recent Amazon Web Services (AWS) outages were linked to misconfigured AI tools, specifically its Kiro AI coding agent. Notably, a December 2025 outage lasted 13 hours due to the AI’s decision to delete and recreate an environment. Although Amazon stated these incidents arose from “user error, not AI error,” with misconfigured access controls at fault, internal reports highlighted the role of the AI tools. Engineers allowed the AI to resolve issues independently, leading to small but predictable outages. A previous 15-hour outage in October 2025 affected public apps and websites, again due to incorrect permissions assigned to the AI tools. Despite the setbacks, Amazon aims for an 80% adoption rate of AI among its developers, implementing numerous safeguards post-incident.
