A recent report by RevenueCat reveals that users cancel annual subscriptions to AI-powered apps 30% faster than those without AI features. Analyzing over 1 billion in-app transactions, the 2026 State of Subscription Apps Report highlights a concerning trend for AI apps: while they attract users more effectively—52% higher conversion from trial to paid subscriptions—long-term loyalty remains a challenge. Annual retention rates stand at 21.1% for AI apps versus 30.7% for non-AI apps, with monthly retention also lagging (6.1% vs. 9.5%). Interestingly, AI apps achieve a higher weekly retention rate of 2.5%. Furthermore, AI applications encounter higher refund rates, at 4.2% compared to 3.5% for non-AI. Despite this, AI apps are monetizing downloads 20% more effectively than traditional counterparts, yet only 27.1% of apps on RevenueCat’s platform are AI-powered. The report underscores a growing disparity between top-performing apps and the market at large.
