Reports Reveal Meta’s Approval of Unauthorized AI Chatbots on the App

Meta is under investigation after a Reuters report revealed its platforms hosted chatbots impersonating celebrities, some even posing as minors without consent. These chatbots, which were flirty and created sexual content, claimed to be stars like Taylor Swift and Scarlett Johansson. Meta acknowledged the failure to prevent such content and removed approximately a dozen bots, yet legal experts warn that the company might face repercussions under California’s “right of publicity” law. Notable representatives, including those for Anne Hathaway, expressed awareness of unauthorized AI images and are considering responses. Concerns extend beyond legal issues, as these avatars could foster unhealthy user attachments and pose safety risks. The SAG-AFTRA union is advocating for federal protections against misuse of likenesses in AI. In response, Meta stated it would enhance AI training and enforce stricter policies to prevent interactions that could exploit minors or create inappropriate content.
