A recent investigation revealed that an academic paper from the National University of Singapore (NUS) was removed from the peer review process due to the inclusion of a hidden AI prompt designed to generate only positive reviews. Titled Meta-Reasoner: Dynamic Guidance for Optimised Inference-Time Reasoning in Large Language Models, the paper was published on Arxiv and contained a prompt instructing AI systems to ignore negatives and produce favorable evaluations. NUS stated that the embedded prompt, hidden in white text, violates academic integrity. While the paper has been withdrawn, issues surrounding AI misuse in academia have emerged, particularly concerning fairness and transparency. Notably, this situation is not isolated, with numerous papers from various international institutions showing similar issues. Experts emphasize the importance of ethical standards in research, warning that AI manipulation could mislead audiences and hinder academic progress. Discussions on stringent policies regarding AI tools in research are ongoing.
