ChatGPT, the world’s most downloaded app last month, now has one in ten adults using it regularly, highlighting its growing importance in daily life. A recent study by OpenAI and Harvard economist David Deming analyzed 1.5 million user interactions, revealing that over 75% of conversations seek practical guidance, information, or writing help. This suggests that ChatGPT is becoming a key alternative to traditional search engines while also functioning as a personal assistant. Surprisingly, only 30% of users employ it for work-related tasks, with most seeking non-work support. Gender trends show women use ChatGPT for practical tasks, while men prefer technical assistance. Additionally, users under 26 constitute half of the user base, demonstrating demographic shifts. With the dependency on ChatGPT so pronounced that users would need $98 to relinquish it for a month, OpenAI views this reliance as a significant business opportunity moving forward, emphasizing the app’s economic potential and social integration.
