Several New Zealand universities have halted the use of AI detection software to combat cheating, recognizing the challenges posed by advanced tools like ChatGPT. Traditional assessment models that evaluate knowledge, analysis, and communication are now under scrutiny since AI can generate essays instantly, questioning how we assess students’ true understanding. An innovative solution emerging is the implementation of Interactive Oral Assessments (IOAs), which involve structured conversations between students and lecturers about submitted work. Over two years, IOAs have shown effectiveness in revealing genuine understanding and critical thinking. Students engage in real-time discussions, making it difficult to outsource or memorize answers, thereby enhancing assessment integrity. Furthermore, IOAs foster essential workplace skills such as clear communication and reasoning. While not without challenges, IOAs revive oral examination forms tailored for today’s learners, offering a credible method to assess academics and better prepare students for professional environments. Universities must consider this shift to maintain academic integrity and student readiness.
