Has artificial intelligence (AI) transformed coding at Spotify? According to co-CEO Gustav Söderström, the company’s Q4 report indicates a significant shift, as their top developers haven’t coded since December. Spotify launched over 50 new features in its streaming app for 2025, including AI-powered playlists and audiobooks.
Using an internal system named Honk, engineers can leverage AI, including Claude Code, to expedite coding and updates. For instance, a Spotify engineer can request feature modifications via Slack, receiving a new app version in real-time, demonstrating increased efficiency in production.
Söderström highlighted that Spotify is developing a unique dataset tailored to musical preferences, making it distinct from other AI models. This innovative dataset enhances the platform’s capabilities and aims for continual improvement. Additionally, Spotify allows metadata disclosure for AI-generated music while proactively combating spam, positioning itself at the forefront of AI in the music industry.
