Revolutionizing Arabic: The UAE’s AI-Driven Quest to Develop the World’s Largest Language Resources

The UAE is pioneering a national strategy to modernize and preserve the Arabic language through advanced artificial intelligence initiatives. This ambitious project aims to digitize over 20 million Arabic words, develop native language models, and create AI-based tools like a comprehensive Arabic-English dictionary with 7,000 contemporary terms. Key projects include the Historical Dictionary by the Sharjah Arabic Language Academy and the Digital Knowledge Hub, which consolidates over 800,000 titles from multiple libraries. The Balanced Arabic Readability Corpus (BAREC) aims to enhance Arabic language education by annotating a 10 million-word corpus for improved readability. The UAE’s homegrown AI model, Falcon Arabic, captures linguistic nuances and is developed entirely on native data, promoting data sovereignty.
