Carnegie Mellon University researchers have developed BrickGPT, an AI tool poised to revolutionize manufacturing. By converting text prompts into step-by-step Lego building guides, BrickGPT enables users and robots to create physically stable models, such as a sofa or a birdhouse. This innovative approach is set to enhance generative manufacturing, allowing individuals to design everyday objects easily. Through a dataset of over 47,000 brick structures, BrickGPT employs a large language model (LLM) to predict brick placements, ensuring stability. If an unstable design occurs, the tool utilizes a rollback feature to rectify it, enhancing overall efficiency. Researchers aim to expand the model beyond its initial 21 object types, improving design diversity and accuracy. This groundbreaking integration of AI and robotics could drastically reduce the time and barriers to prototype development.
