Roland, a leader in the instruments and music software industry, is stepping into the AI-assisted creativity arena with its new tool, ‘Melody Flip’. Developed in collaboration with Sony Computer Science Laboratories, this melody-generation software enhances musicians’ creative workflows. It allows users to import audio files, automatically analyzing their musical components—structure, BPM, key, chord progressions, genre, and mood. The analysis is paired with a curated library of 300 creative palettes, enabling producers to generate innovative melodic ideas. Scheduled for release as a DAW plug-in for MacOS and Windows, a free trial will be available in May. However, it raises ethical questions regarding the use of copyrighted audio files. In a bid to promote responsible AI music practices, Roland, alongside Universal Music Group, published principles in 2024, emphasizing the importance of respecting human-created works in the age of AI. This tool represents a significant intersection of music and technology.
