Sam Altman Issues ‘Code Red’ for ChatGPT as Google Accelerates Its Advancements

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has enacted a “code red” directive to enhance ChatGPT’s performance amid competitive pressure from Google, particularly following the release of its Gemini 3 AI model, which outperformed ChatGPT in recent benchmarks. In a recent internal memo, Altman urged employees to focus on increasing speed, reliability, and user personalization for the chatbot while postponing advertising and specialized versions for health and shopping.

With significant planned expenditures exceeding $74 billion, Wall Street is raising concerns about a potential AI bubble, especially given OpenAI’s anticipated need for $200 billion in annual revenue to achieve profitability by 2030. Despite these challenges, ChatGPT remains ahead in user engagement, boasting over 800 million weekly active users compared to Gemini’s 650 million monthly users. Additionally, OpenAI is reportedly developing a new AI model known as “Garlic” to further bolster its offerings.
