Sam Altman of OpenAI Unveils Pentagon Partnership with Enhanced Technical Safeguards

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman announced that the Department of Defense (DoD) has authorized the use of OpenAI’s AI models within its classified network, marking a pivotal agreement after tensions with competitor Anthropic. The Pentagon previously sought AI systems for “all lawful purposes,” but Anthropic resisted, emphasizing concerns over mass surveillance and autonomous weapons. In a response to failed negotiations, President Donald Trump criticized Anthropic, leading to a supply-chain risk designation against the company. The DoD plans to implement OpenAI’s safety principles, which prohibit domestic surveillance and ensure human oversight in military applications. Altman stated the company is committed to building safeguards to maintain ethical use of AI technologies and is urging the DoD to extend these terms to all AI firms. This agreement reflects a significant shift in military-civilian collaborations on AI technology, aiming at responsible integration while addressing safety and ethical concerns in defense practices.
