Sam Altman Predicts OpenAI Will Cultivate a ‘Legitimate AI Researcher’ by 2028

OpenAI is advancing its deep learning systems, aiming to achieve an intern-level research assistant by September 2026 and a fully automated AI researcher by 2028, according to CEO Sam Altman. This ambitious timeline coincides with OpenAI’s transition to a public benefit corporation, enabling it to raise capital while focusing on responsible AI development. Chief Scientist Jakub Pachocki emphasized that the goal is to create systems capable of handling complex research autonomously. He noted the potential for superintelligence—AI surpassing human intelligence in critical tasks—within a decade. To realize these objectives, OpenAI plans to innovate algorithms and significantly increase “test time compute,” which refers to the computational resources provided to models for problem-solving. The non-profit OpenAI Foundation will oversee the research direction, supporting initiatives like disease cures. This restructuring also allows OpenAI to invest heavily in infrastructure, committing $1.4 trillion to achieve its scientific goals.
