Scameter App in Hong Kong Receives Upgrade: New AI Tools Combat Social Media Scams

The Hong Kong police are enhancing the Scameter app to identify fraudulent social media content as online scams, particularly in employment and investment, continue to rise alongside a slight increase in overall scam cases. According to Deputy Police Commissioner Keith Yip Wan-lung, scammers are evolving their strategies to exploit current trends, increasingly targeting victims via social media. He emphasized that these criminals craft scams focused on specific demographics and technological advancements, making online platforms their preferred method of operation. In the first nine months of 2025, Hong Kong recorded 32,142 scam reports, a marginal 0.1% increase from the previous year, while lost funds totaled HK$5.64 billion (approximately US$726 million), reflecting a 12% decrease. Notably, the police managed to freeze 27.6% more scam proceeds, successfully blocking HK$1.57 billion through 1,124 cases during this period, showcasing improved enforcement against online fraud.
