Scammers Misuse OpenAI’s Name in Phony Advertising Platform Aimed at Marketers

A phishing operation is targeting digital marketers with fraudulent emails offering beta access to “OpenAI Advertising GPT,” a non-existent app. The scam, masquerading as an invitation through Apple’s TestFlight platform, promises advertising credits and AI campaign management tools while impersonating OpenAI, the company behind ChatGPT. Marketing professional Adriaan Dekker publicly warned about the scam on LinkedIn, highlighting red flags such as the deceptive “OpenAI Advertising, LLC” name. The scam aims to exploit industry anticipation around OpenAI’s advertising developments, claiming compatibility with various Apple devices and offering financial incentives to encourage installation. Legitimate OpenAI communications originate from verified domains; thus, recipients should avoid clicking unsolicited links and report phishing attempts. As artificial intelligence-related scams rise, marketers must implement strict verification protocols to safeguard against personal data theft and malicious software distribution. Dekker emphasized vigilance in the evolving landscape of digital marketing and advertising technology scams.
