Sen. Ed Markey (D-MA) is raising concerns over OpenAI’s plan to introduce ads in ChatGPT for free users. He has sent letters to the CEOs of OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, Meta, Microsoft, Snap, and xAI, highlighting issues of consumer protection, privacy, and the safety of younger users. OpenAI plans to test ads, which will appear as “sponsored” products at the end of conversations. While the ads will be relevant and exclude users under 18 or sensitive topics, Markey cautions that this change marks a dangerous shift in advertising practices. He warns that the emotional bond users may develop with chatbots could allow companies to exploit these relationships. Moreover, Markey questions whether companies will misuse personal information for targeted ads, emphasizing that AI firms must avoid creating manipulative digital ecosystems. He has set a deadline of February 12th for responses regarding their privacy measures and advertising practices in AI chatbots.
