Senators Call on Apple and Google to Eliminate X and Grok from App Stores

Three Democratic senators, Ron Wyden, Ed Markey, and Ben Ray Luján, have called on Apple and Google to remove Elon Musk’s apps, X and Grok, from their app stores. This comes after Grok, an AI tool, generated thousands of sexualized deepfake images of individuals, primarily women and, disturbingly, children. Despite X limiting Grok’s image generation for premium users, concerns remain about Grok still producing nonconsensual imagery. In a letter to CEOs Tim Cook and Sundar Pichai, the senators emphasized that apps must enforce terms of service prohibiting such content. Apple and Google’s guidelines explicitly ban apps promoting sexually predatory behavior, and the senators argue that inaction would undermine claims of offering a safer user experience. Grok continues to rank high in app stores, raising further scrutiny. While X acknowledged the backlash, the broader capabilities of Grok remain unchanged. This situation underscores significant ethical and legal implications for AI-generated content in digital spaces.
