At the International Film Festival of India (IFFI), Shekhar Kapur and Berlinale Chief Tricia Tuttle discussed the role of AI in the film industry. Both emphasized that while AI is rapidly advancing, it cannot replicate the artistry, collaboration, and spontaneity that define cinema. Tuttle stated, “Tools don’t make films good. Storytelling and craftsmanship do,” highlighting that technology lacks narrative depth. Kapur cautioned that AI’s heavy involvement might erode the collaborative spirit essential to filmmaking. He acknowledged AI’s potential to democratize filmmaking, despite risks of creative isolation. As AI-generated content increases, festivals will face operational challenges like quality checks and rights verification. Both speakers agreed AI will not replace traditional cinema but will reshape the cinematic landscape, creating new platforms and audiences. They called for an adaptation of submission rules and frameworks to navigate this evolving ecosystem while preserving emotional authenticity and human presence in storytelling.
